Cut the Rope, a very fun iPhone/iPad game, has a free holiday version out. Recommended.

Marco the Tumblr gets to use an enduring rotary phone with his Verizon FiOS connection.

Spencer Hall with another hilarious column at Every Day Should Be Saturday, this time centering on the West Virginia hiring of a football coach-in-waiting.

The Times has been running a series over the last week on the 1960 plane collision over NYC that resulted in a plane crashing in Park Slope. This article on the state of the neighborhood in 1960 is a great read if you’ve seen the vitality of the neighborhood today, or are interested in urban planning and post-war urban decay in US cities. It’s remarkable how much of urban decay was caused by a combination of lending practices (encouraging a move to suburbs by middle-class whites) and racism.

This post, another in the Park Slope crash series, has a great 1960/2010 matched photo of the wreckage.

I love the National, so I really enjoyed this Pitchfork interview with Aaron Dressner, one of the musical forces behind the band.

Let’s start things off with some fresh sunset photos from one of my fellow DRA founding fathers, Chris Walton.

I think my recent link posts have fired up the spambots, as I’ve been getting some amusing spam comments (they never show up on the site, as WordPress’ spam filter does a nice job catching them). Here’s a response to my post on Gmail setup under iOS 4: “Unhappy for the analyze, but I’m truly fatherly the new Zune, and comic this, as compartment as the excellent reviews few additional fill have longhand, testament cater you terminate if it’s the aright prime for you.”

Ha ha, the Taiwanese video site NMA (they quickly put together videos of current events and computer animate them, such as Tigers Woods crashing his truck or Stephen Slater jumping out of the plane) has a video up on the Chinese Confucius Peace Prize, celebrating “peace from the Chinese perspective”. Love it. And I love the armed giant Pandas serving as Chinese soldiers.

Wild to see the aftermath of this 1960 plane crash in Park Slope in Brooklyn, given that I now live blocks away from the crash site.

A sample paragraph:

He sucks, and most things do, but when he dips his toes across into the realm of football they deserve to be chainsawed off at the nearest convenience. The entire song is supposedly about football, but it’s really about how Kenny Chesney should be bound and gagged, bundled into an uninsulated rocket filled with honey badgers, and shot into the sun. Oddly enough, this is what we think every Kenny Chesney song is about. Hm.

Every year my dad and I (and, recently, Blake and his dad) go to the Monterey Peninsula in mid-August for car lover heaven. Classic cars from all eras in immaculate condition, old racing cars being driven flat out around the Laguna Seca race track, so many Ferraris in one place that you laugh out loud. But within all of this aesthetic and aural delight, there are the stinkers. This year I decided to take photos of whatever stinkers I saw; they are now up at Flickr (complete with my informative captions). In addition, you can see the slide show below. The group with the highest concentration of, ahem, “winners” was the BMW M5 group at the Concorso Italiano (yes, it is an Italian car show, but they have an area set up for non-Italian cars).

On Sunday, Vanessa’s lifelong friend, Jamie, and her old roommate, Brady, met up with us for a walk through the Mission over to Dolores Park, where we soaked in some of the unseasonably good weather. I decided that a nice theme for the day would be to capture all the hilarious hipster outfits with my camera. Note that higher quality photos are up at my Flickr photoset.

We begin our tour with this gentleman walking down Mission Street. I actually captured this photo earlier in the week, but it’s a perfect accompaniment for Sunday’s photos.

Next up is this woman in awesome tights at a sidewalk sale. Note that you can see some sort of power shovel device laying on the sidewalk on the right side of the photo. I kinda wish I had bought that.

Once we got to the park, we saw these two hipsters rocking it tuff.

The two gals in bikinis were acommpanied by a guy (I think) in all black, video taping their every move. For $3, you could hit them with water balloons. I only saw one group take them up on that offer.

What is this couple looking at? A woman (at center in the righthand photo) who spent ten minutes walking around in her underwear by the bathroom in the park, periodically bending over, the whole time holding on to her jeans with one hand. I am assuming that she is crazy.

This guy had a sweet staff. He appeared to be selling something from his rolling cooler.

A run-of-the-mill outfit, tight and black.

Jamie, Brady and Vanessa, enjoying the scenery.

This hipster couple’s fashion was highlighted by the dude’s shortie shorts that he stripped down to for sunbathing.

Tight, tight jeans on this person.

Awesome chow chow.

The guy at the center, in the hat, was playing some amazing air drums for a couple songs. Even the dog in the right foreground was into it.

Um, no idea why they were putting up a tent. After almost getting it erected, either they failed at the very end or gave up.

And…more awesome shorts. None of my shorts or jeans are tight enough, based on the prevailing fashion.

Finally, on the way home, we encountered this gentleman. He looked a little old to be shooting for ironic hipster, so let’s just classify it as, um, unique.
