An update on a Gizmodo column that questions the status quo on gadget use on airplanes during takeoff and landing–I highly recommend reading that original piece, linked to herein.
Since I got my first pair of inconspicuous canalphones, I've ignored the "turn off your iPod" warning on every flight I've been on. Even though I still clearly have cords running from my ears, I've only been asked perhaps 5 times about them, and maybe 3 of those times I was asked if my iPod was off, to which I replied "Yes." So personally the policy hasn't had much impact on me, on both domestic and international flights.
