Joe P writes about Federer, and Federer's amazing trick shot in his US Open semifinal match's penultimate point (played on Sunday). Worth viewing on YouTube (see comment 5 to the column).

OK, I'm on a map roll. This is also fascinating. Check how large Mission Bay used to be.

More great old maps, this one with some good annotations. I love looking at the railroad right-of-ways (from present day 280 path at San Jose up to 22nd and Harrison, as well as from SE to NW in Potrero) and comparing to present-day aerial photos on Google Maps. You can definitely see how the non-grid right-of-ways impacted buildings. See, e.g., Juri Commons (east of Guerrero, north of 26th, now a small park) and the building put in south of 26th, west of Guerrero to fill in the right-of-way. This also explains why the building housing Cafe Arguello (west side of Mission, south of 24th) is at a strange angle to Mission Street.

Interesting post from a science blogger. Nice Lebowski reference.

And interesting to see Mission Creek on that Mission Bay map. I always wondered – where the heck is Mission Creek (but mostly assumed it just wasn’t really a creek).
Makes me think that Mission Creek presumably ran by where the Mission Creek Cafe is, at 15th and Guerrero. I can’t pinpoint the street grid on that map, though.
