Nevius weighs in on one of the annoyances of life in SF. Last night I saw a bum with a shopping cart passing off his cart full of containers to someone with one of those old pickups with wooden bed walls–specialization in the field!

Sweet. I think Blake intro'ed me to them back in high school.

I've felt what Robin Hilton posts about here: loving an album or band to death, getting burned out and then coming back to that band after a few years and loving them all over again.

Not as funny as the Shatner impression, but still funny.

Damn funny. My favorite: a cell phone music festival. "Would you rather watch a rock show through your cell-phone camera than ever actually look at the stage? Do you like to review the pictures you have just taken while still at the concert, even though the concert is still happening? Would you rather capture a moment than experience it?"

I'm not a programmer, but still find this step-through a feature addition to NetNewsWire to be very interesting.

My Sony pocket cam has died on me, so I'm in the market for a new compact cam. There are some interesting high-end point-and-shoot cameras, with manual controls and great image quality while much easier to tote around than an SLR. This is a good combo test from a top photo review site.

LOL! Hat tip to Rob Neyer.

Apple is on a real roll rejecting applications. Pretty irritating. We'll see if any other app stores on smart phones get real traction and force Apple to pay more attention to what consumers want. They are currently only acting in their own interest.

I picked this up for my iPhone. As the review says, it is a solid sequel to an excellent game.

Nice tip from Lifehacker. I was unaware of the Google+Growl utility that makes this happen.

Solid overview.

Another frustrated iPhone developer. Apple could maybe spend a little time on this, figure its shite out, perhaps? Sounds like an opening for Palm…

Hopefully this will get somewhere.
Music Minute!

A couple quick music thoughts based on what I’ve been listening to this week:
Emitt Rhodes, The Emitt Rhodes Recordings 1969-1973
Thanks to AllMusic.com’s blog for introducing Vanessa and me to Emitt Rhodes, a late ’60s pop performer. He reminds me of Brendan Benson at times and (as V pointed out) the Beatles at other times, so if you like either of those musical acts, give him a listen. I took advantage of my Rhapsody subscription to kick the tires. Here’s what AllMusic has to say about him:
If you’re reading this, you must have an interest in the lovely pop/rock sounds of Emitt Rhodes and, simply put, you need to buy this CD. The Emitt Rhodes Recordings 1969-1973 collects all four albums the singer/songwriter/musical wiz recorded over that period of time and adds one extra track (the 1973 single “Tame the Lion”). Stacked back to back, the records Rhodes recorded in that short time stand up as one of the great brief flashes of inspiration and greatness in pop music history.
The Dead Weather, Horehound
Jack White’s latest project, The Dead Weather, released its debut album this week. I will admit to growing Jack White fatigue over the last few years as the Stripes moved out of the musical sweet spot they occupied for me, White trashed Detroit on his way out of town and the Raconteurs never really lived up to the promise of Jack White + Brendan Benson. So despite the presence of the Alison Mosshart from the Kills, a band I quite like, I don’t find too much of interest here. Ah well.
Carrie Brownstein, bastion of awesomeness
Not a new musical release, but I’d like to direct everyone’s attention to Carrie Brownstein, former Sleater-Kinney band member and now NPR blogger. I was already a big fan of hers due to Sleater-Kinney and her hilarious presence on the NPR All Songs Considered roundtable podcasts, but now she has decided to become a full-on Phish fan for a week, both feet in, and has had several chuckleworthy blog posts. Check out her blog here and start with the first post to catch up. That’s her to the right, part of her daily photo update that chronicles her transition to (perhaps) a Phish fan. My favorite photo caption was from update #7: “Phish status: Listening to A Live One plus more recommended online clips. Nearly lost control and put on a band called Woods. A friend intervened.”
